Town centre update

Chatham Place – Q-Park has secured the Park Mark award for its new car park at Chatham Place.

Intex Cleaning Services – the contractor appointed by Reading UK CIC - through its Business Improvement District Committee - is currently undertaking the fourth cycle of steam cleaning and chewing gum removal in the town centre. As with previous cleans, they are operating overnight from 7.00 pm - 7.00 am, five days a week.

Market Place – the second event in the newly refurbished Market Place area will be a speciality market staged by The Freemarketeers: ‘The Big Green Market’ will take place from Thursday 13 to Saturday 15 December.

Resurfacing works will take place throughout the Market Place area between 7pm on Friday 2 November and 5am on Monday 5 November.

Civic area - Reading Borough Council has unveiled plans to build a new theatre and library complex next to the proposed civic centre building in Hosier Street. http://www.reading.gov.uk

Retail

Mango Kick, a juice and salad bar, is now operating from 17 Harris Arcade, where the refurbishment works are almost complete.

Sushi One0Eight is now open at 19 Queen Victoria Street.

Davina’s is due to start fitting out at 20 Market Place.

Broad Street Mall

Puss in Boots has relocated from Harris Arcade and taken 117 BSM, on the first floor.

Schticla Shoes has commenced fitting out at 54 BSM (ex Colorama unit).

The Name Shop.net has opened for trade in 48 BSM (temporary trader).

Hidden Hearing has opened in 19 Oxford Road.

The Oracle

Octopus has opened on the Upper Mall next to Swarovski and Curry’s, selling novel gift items.

Fragrance Shop is fitting out opposite Hotel Chocolat on the Upper Mall and is due to open at the beginning of this month.

Timberland has been re-opened but not as a franchise, as before.

Reading’s first real ice rink will be installed on The Oracle Riverside from 30 November, running until 6 January 2008. Tickets will be £7 for adults and £5 for children (under 12).

Planning

An application has been lodged to change the use of the ground floor of 9-15 Blagrave Street from office (B1) to retail use (A1).

An application has been lodged to change the use of 19 Union Street (ground and first floors) from a barbershop to a studio for nail care and tanning.

The application by Muse Developments - to change the use of 78 Oxford Road to a marketing suite for its adjacent development at Chatham Place - has been approved (October’s enews refers).

Reading Town Centre Christmas Light Switch-on Weekend - Friday 23 November to Sunday 25 November

Come along and enjoy a weekend of festivities across Reading Town Centre.

Friday 23rd, from 4pm - Reading Town Centre Light Switch-on and special Christmas entertainment. Reading’s dazzling festive lights will be displayed across the town centre from Friday. Father Christmas and his reindeer will be visiting to help us celebrate, along with costumed characters and lots more street entertainment.

Friday 23rd, 7pm - The Riverside Christmas Spectacular at the Oracle. Building on last year’s success, this stunning multimedia performance incorporates synchronized fire performers, dancers and jugglers plus the added excitement of an aerialist suspended high over the stage!

Saturday 24th, 4pm - Broad Street Mall Light Switch-on. Festive fun and activities in the build up to the big switch on at 4pm with secret celebrity guests Antony Cotton and Samia Smith (Sean Tulley & Maria Sutherland from Coronation Street) attending the ceremony; followed by the launch of the ‘Giving Tree’.

Ancient Egypt: Reading’s Egyptology collection

Amazing treasures from the museum’s Egyptology collection are on display for the first time in many years in our Ancient Egypt exhibition. The exhibition illustrates aspects of life and death in Ancient Egypt and includes complementary objects loaned by the British Museum and, from Birmingham Museum, the mummy of Namenkhet-Amun.

The Thames to Tahiti: Robert Gibbings, artist, author and adventurer

Robert Gibbings did more than anyone to bring the art of wood engraving to the general public. He owned the Golden Cockerel Press and wrote a series of river and travel books, including the best-selling Sweet Thames Run Softly and lorana! A Tahitian Journal. This exhibition explores his colourful life and art through his beautiful engravings, books and personal memorabilia.
