Reading Enews – September 2007

Reading’s economy

Further evidence of the strength of Reading’s economy can be seen in the 0.5% drop in Job Seeker Allowance (JSA) claimants over the 12 months to July 2007, with only 2% of our working age population now claiming JSA.

JSA is payable to people under pensionable age who are available for, and actively seeking, work of at least 40 hours a week, and is widely recognised as the key measure of employment rates. For more information visit: www.nomisweb.co.uk/reports/lmp/la/2038431750/report.aspx?town=reading

Reading Borough Council is delighted to be hosting the start of the second stage of the seven day race, on 10 September. This stage will start at 10.30am from Palmer Park Velodrome. The route will take the riders through town and out onto the A4 to Burghfield Road where they will head south towards Southampton.

Better still why not cycle: extra bike racks will be made available for people cycling to the event; or take the bus - Palmer Park is on is route 17, the purple route.

There will be lots to see at Palmer Park from 9am when the signing in ceremony for the riders begins and the information stalls open; in addition a programme of taster activities will follow on from the race at the Velodrome - from 10.45am until 12.30pm.

In Town Without My Car - 20 September 2007

This year, for the first time, Reading is joining in this international event during European Mobility Week. The aim is to reduce pollution and carbon emissions that affect climate change and to encourage people to improve their fitness, save money and the environment at the same time.

The idea is for commuters, shoppers and other town centre users to leave their cars at home and, if at all possible walk, cycle or use public transport to travel into Reading on to mark 'In Town Without My Car' day. For full details of this event: www.reading.gov.uk/intownwithoutmycar

Businesses are being invited to set themselves a challenge to reduce car usage on the 20th. Each business will decide for themselves whether they are going to reduce the number of spaces in their car park, give a free drink to anyone coming to work without their car, ask work teams to compete with each other to have the fewest car miles that day…the choice is yours. To register your business for the Business Challenge, you can fill in the form online at: www.reading.gov.uk/intownwithoutmycar. As businesses sign up, their details will be registered on the Reading Borough Council web site and they will be included in any press coverage after the event.

To help make it easier to travel without your car that day there will be FREE return bus tickets for Madejski Park & Ride. Tickets will be handed out at the Madejski Park & Ride site from 7am to 9.30am on 20 September.

Don’t miss the road show on 18 September to help you get ready for ‘In Town Without My Car’ day. Cycle and public transport information as well as Dr Bike session and cycle smoothies will be at the east end of Broad Street from 10am to 4pm.

News from Jelly Legg’d Chicken

Jelly will once again be taking part in the successful Affordable Art Fair in Battersea on 17-21 October, where they will be showcasing the artwork of some of the finest local talent. This art fair is a great event with all pieces under £3,000 and the jelly team would be delighted to see you there. Suzanne Stallard has a limited number of VIP tickets that she is offering to e-news readers on a first come, first served basis. To contact Suzanne and request guest tickets please email her at smallapple@mac.com or contact the jelly on 0118 9548086.

And finally…

A new partnership has been formed between jelly and The Voice Studio, offering people the chance to explore their creativity by unlocking the voice. The Voice Studio offers workshops, classes and private tuition to a range of people from beginners right through to professional singers and actors. The basic premise is that anyone who can hear and speak can also sing, and the classes are all about freeing up parts of the body to facilitate this. After a course of lessons, speaking and singing become freer, easier, more secure and a lot more fun. Self-expression becomes clear and direct, delivery natural, and even the most reluctant of singers can hardly stop themselves wanting to break into song. If you have vocal problems, inhibitions or want to explore your untapped vocal potential, find out more from thevoicestudio@btinternet.com, or call 07930 321059.
