Enews – September 2007
Reading’s
economy
Further evidence
of the strength of Reading’s economy
can be seen in the 0.5% drop in Job Seeker Allowance (JSA) claimants
over
the 12 months to July 2007, with only 2% of our working age population
now claiming JSA.
JSA is payable
to people under pensionable age who are available for, and actively
seeking, work of at least 40
hours a week, and
is widely recognised as the key measure of employment rates.

In
Town Without My Car - 20 September
2007
This year, for
the first time, Reading is joining in this international
event during
European
Mobility Week.
The
aim is to reduce pollution
and carbon emissions that affect
climate change and to encourage
people
to improve
their fitness,
save
money
and the environment
at the same time. The idea is for
commuters, shoppers and other town centre users to
leave their
cars at
home and, if
at all possible
walk, cycle
or use
public transport to travel into
Reading on to mark 'In Town Without
My Car'
day. For
full details
of this event:
www.reading.gov.uk/intownwithoutmycar
Businesses
are being invited to set themselves a challenge
to reduce
car usage on the
20th. Each business
will
decide for themselves
whether they are going to reduce
the number of spaces in their
car park,
give a free drink to anyone
coming to work without their car, ask
work teams to compete with
each other
to have the fewest car miles
that day…the choice is
yours. To register your business
for the Business Challenge,
you can fill in the form online
at:
www.reading.gov.uk/intownwithoutmycar.
As businesses sign up, their
details will be registered
on the Reading
Borough Council web site and
they will be included in any
press coverage after the event.
To
help make it easier to travel
without your car that day
there will be FREE
return bus
tickets for Madejski
Park & Ride. Tickets
will be handed out at the
Madejski Park & Ride
site from 7am to 9.30am on
20 September.
Don’t
miss the road show on 18
September to help you get
ready for ‘In Town
Without My Car’ day.
Cycle and public transport
information as well as
Dr Bike session and cycle
smoothies
will be at the east end
of Broad Street from 10am
to
