Reading Enews – September 2008

In Town Without My Car

On Tuesday 16 September come along to Broad Street and find out all you need to know about sustainable travel. This one day event marks the launch of the European Mobility Week, which will see many events happening locally in the build up to Monday 22 September, when it is hoped that many people will leave their cars behind and walk, cycle or take the train or bus to work.

For more information, or to get involved, please call 0118 939 0159 or email thalia.carr@reading.gov.uk

Retail

Broad Street Mall

Poundland has taken a new lease on 37 BSM (ex Atlantic Fashion) and will be open for business in early September.

The Great British Breakfast returns to Broad Street Mall when Boswell’s café opens for business on 11 September 2008. Boswells was one of the original tenants in the food court of the Butts Centre over 30 years ago, trading as Swiss Chalet. It is owned and managed by the Burn family who are all Reading area residents and we welcome their return.

The gents, baby change and disabled facilities have reopened to the public; the ladies should be completed by 5 September 2008.

Tickets to the Broad Street Mall Charity Ball are now on sale; our chosen charity this year is the British Heart Foundation and sponsorship opportunities are available. The venue is Reading Town Hall, dress code black tie & ball gowns and the date is 29 November 2008.

For further information please contact Stephanie Maguire on marketingmanager@broadstreetmall.com or Steve Fawke on centremanager@broadstreetmall.com. Half the tickets have already sold so book early to avoid disappointment. Last year we raised in excess of £10,000 and we aim to beat that this year!

Planning

Brook Henderson has applied to change the use of 27 - 32 Market Place to a basement bar (Class A4 use), ground floor retail units and a mixed use hotel/restaurant/bar (Class C1/A3/A4 use) on the first, second and third floors. This will include partial demolition of the rear of the building, three storey extension to the rear, refurbishment and a new Market Place facade.

An application has been lodged to change the use of the first floor of 19 - 20 Union Street from storage ancillary to nail & studio for beauty care. This will include a new door to the shop front forming a separate entrance to the premises.

An application has been lodged for the refurbishment of Aldwych House at 2 Blagrave Street, including new cladding and the inclusion of two additional floors.

Inward Investment

House of Fraser is to invest GBP 150m in the overhaul of its department stores by the end of the year, including its Reading store.
